Parents' prayer

Parents' prayer

Before you begin leading your children through this study, spend time alone with God interceding for His help. Ask Him to help you grow in thankfulness, and to release His power in your children. If you wish, you can use the sample prayer below to guide you in praying for your kids' character development.

Sample prayer

Lord, You are the giver of so many good things (James 1:17). I have so much to be thankful for, yet I find it so easy to fall into an “oh poor me” attitude. Instead of praising You, I use my voice to complain and model ungratefulness for our kids. In my mind I keep records of injustices. I complain that I am always the one who (mention all that apply and add some of your own):

_ cuts the grass
_ changes dirty diapers
_ tidies the kitchen counter
_ sweeps the floor
_ scrubs the toilets
_ makes the bed(s)
_ picks up dirty laundry
_ fills the ice cube trays
_ empties the dishwasher
_ replaces the toilet roll
_ makes sure the homework is done
_ answers the phone
_ fills the car with gas
_ takes the car in for an oil change
_ pays the bills
_ reads to the kids
_ puts the kids to bed
_ drives the kids around
_ referees the squabbles
_ empties the garbage
_ apologizes first

Please forgive me for being like an ungrateful Israelite, whining about water and manna in the desert (Numbers 11:10, 13, 18, 20). Will You send Your Spirit to fill me with joy instead of self-pity? Will You help me find 100 reasons to praise You today? I want to be joyful always and ready to give thanks in all circumstances because this is Your will for us in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-19). For Your love and patience, I thank You! Amen.
