Farewell to the good, to pursue the best

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails. – Proverbs 19:21

If you want to make good use of your time, you’ve got to know what’s most important and then give it all you’ve got. – Lee Iacocca

How can time be one of our greatest blessings, yet still cause such grief? I eagerly fill the calendar with exciting activities, then lament that our lives are too busy. My heart longs for a slower pace, a chance to invest… play… connect.

I recently wrote, “Life feels like a massive buffet… so many good things to dive into but I know I’ll pay for it if I try to do it all.” I have, in fact, overstuffed myself at an all-you-can-eat establishment in the past. Ugh – the bellyache! And I’ve been living my life the same way. Pack it in! Do it all! Just one more worthwhile event! Now I have a terrible heartache.

The things that keep me busy are good things. But the Holy Spirit has been whispering one predominant word to me for the past year. I’ve heard it over and over…

“People.”

“Krista, it’s the people that are most important.”

“I want you to focus on My people.”

In my imperfect, selfish stubbornness, I’ve been replying, “Okay, just let me finish helping with some fundraising at school.” “Can’t I first get through soccer season?” “Tomorrow. My filing cabinet REALLY needs cleaning out.” “I’ve got a blog post due.” And my heart continues to ache because I’m not allowing the Lord’s purpose to prevail.

We have a neighbour who lost her sweet husband a few years ago. I saw her as I was out shovelling the other day and as we chatted she mentioned how she sometimes stays at the swimming pool all morning because “there’s nothing to do at home.”

“People.”

My dad celebrated his 80th birthday last fall. He’s still a pretty healthy guy but you never know how much time we have left with someone.

“Krista, it’s the people that are most important.”

Benjamin and Jessica are growing up at the speed of light. The babies I just brought home a few months ago are somehow in Grades 2 and 3 already. It’s going too fast.

“I want you to focus on My people.”

And as I’ve negotiated with God, trying to get a handle on “Exactly which people?” I’ve come to realize that He wants my energy and attention focused on the neighbours I can invite for tea, the seniors I can do a walk-talk with, the kids I can pull onto my lap for a snuggle. I love the thought of connecting at that level. But it means I have to give up other things – like this blog.

For two-and-a-half years we’ve have had the incredible honour of growing our children alongside you and your “kids of integrity.” Oh, how you’ve encouraged us! Thank you for allowing us to share the same car on the rollercoaster. It’s been SUCH a fun journey!

You know the long list of character traits on the KOI website? Courage, joy, patience… ? We pray all of them for you as you model Christ to your children and teach them to light up the world. To God be the glory!

Hugs and blessings to you,

Rob, Krista, Benjamin and Jessica
